Peace through Commerce

On Friday, May 9, 2008, myguideTravel was a sponsor of the annual ICCUSA (New England chapter) Emerald Award Gala Ball held at the InterContinental Hotel in Boston. ICCUSA is the Ireland Chamber of Commerce in the USA
and is a non-profit business networking organization with a focus on Ireland. ICCUSA is nationwide in the US and each major city has its own chapter. ICCUSA’s goal is to foster business relationships and economic exchanges between the US and Ireland in a variety of ways, including a breakfast speaking series, charitable fund raising and an annual trade mission.

This annual trade mission, which takes place October 6 to 12 in 2008, will see approximately 24 people visit Belfast and Dublin to seek new business opportunities with Irish businesspeople and firms. This will be the third annual trade mission and if the 2008 version is as successful as the first two, it will be an excellent trip. The trade mission reinforces the historic, deep and profitable links between Ireland and the USA. However, today it is a much more balanced and nuanced relationship as Ireland has seen much prosperity in the last 20 years and has realized the progress such prosperity brings.

It is also quite appropriate that this year’s trade mission will be visiting Belfast as well as Dublin. I am of the opinion that the tremendous political progress made in Northern Ireland over the past 10 years has been assisted in no small part through commerce and that the roles of such organizations as ICCUSA, The Ireland Funds and the Ireland US Council can’t be understated. In fact, peace through commerce is one of ICCUSA’s motivations and their goal is to continue to contribute to the progress & success being enjoyed by those on the island of Ireland.
